Weekly Comments: Politicians Sling Mud, But Folks Keep Buying

Political ads are overwhelming our television, radio, social media, and mailboxes.

I would like to see our candidates follow one rule: A Democrat can talk without mentioning Trump or his policies and a Republican can talk without mentioning Socialism or Communism. We know you are against those; tell us what you are for.

Republicans have President Trump and a narrow majority in Congress. Democrats should recall this Will Rogers bit of advice, “You can’t beat an Administration by attacking it. You have to show some plan of improving on it.” (WA #101, Nov. 16, 1924)

The economy is the hottest topic today. While many are complaining, I read a report that shows people are saving more and shopping more. Toy sales are up, partly because adults are buying for themselves. Have you done what Will Rogers admitted to? “I bought some mechanical and electric things for the kids and wore ’em out playing with ’em myself.”  (DT #120, Dec. 23, 1926)

Perhaps surprising to you, wages for lower-income folks have done better than for higher-income workers.

The price of gasoline and diesel fuel is a hot topic. And it’s legitimate because the price affects our daily lives and almost everything we buy. Democrats blame Republicans for it being too high. But Democrats are in a quandary. It was President Biden and Democrats in Congress who cancelled the Keystone pipeline, closed refineries, and favored Electric Vehicles powered by solar and wind. Maybe they’ve changed, but 4 years ago they wanted higher gas prices to kinda force us to buy EVs.

Historic quotes by Will Rogers:

“No matter what a President does he is wrong according to some people.” WA #352, Sept. 22, 1929

(After this election) “If your side lost, don’t take it too much to heart. Remember there is always this difference between the United States and a dictatorship: a dictator runs the country, but here the country runs the president.” (DT #1954, Nov. 8, 1932)
